Hunger Charities

I previously highlighted Children's Hunger Fund as an efficient charity that feeds the hungry around the world. Recognizing that there must be a large number of charities that are working to end global hunger, I conducted a search on Charity Navigator based on the words hunger and hungry, then I filtered the results to view only international organizations.

The 25 charities resulting from my Charity Navigator search are shown below. Charities that spent the highest percentage of funds on program expenses (as opposed to administrative or advertising expenses), are listed first. Revenues are in $millions and are the latest reflected in Charity Navigator as of 8 Oct 2006, which for most charities is the fiscal year ending Dec 2004. Stars reflect the overall rating awarded by Charity Navigator, with 4 being best and 0 being worst.

You will see from the list below that efficiency does matter. For example, looking at the list, if I were to donate $100 to Children's Hunger Fund, $99.60 of my donation would actually go towards the cause. Alternately, if I were to give $100 to Freedom from Hunger, only $76.40 would go towards the cause. Similar name, very different financial implications. All other things being equal, I know which charity I would choose to invest in.
